It is believed that the coconut flower treats issues related to body heat, kidney stones, phlegm, lungs and stomach.

Coconut flower, also known as coconut apple, sprout and pearl, is being sold in the nearby areas of Theni district, Cumbum, Tamil Nadu. These areas include the Kudalur village, Chinnamanur town, and other places. According to Local18 Tamil, the natives in the Theni area are eager to purchase the coconut flower which has a taste quite similar to that of the coconut milk.

Shopkeepers selling coconut flowers say that this product can treat ailments related to liver, mouth ulcers and gas problems. They can also be instrumental in solving the issues related to body heat, kidney stones, phlegm, lungs and stomach. The coconut flower is imported from Pollachi and is then sold all over the Theni district. Traders who purchase from Pollachi at Rs 70 per coconut sell it at Rs 80 to Rs 100 per coconut to the people.

The coconut plucked from the coconut tree is buried back in the soil and then allowed to cultivate in it for 90 days. After 90 days of germination, a flower is formed inside the coconut. This coconut is then dug out of the soil after 90 days and then sent to different areas for sale. During the time of being buried in the soil, the flower has absorbed all the nutrients of the coconut.

The coconut flower tastes more luscious when eaten with the sugar available in the native areas. Traders say that coconuts can be used for up to 7 days without uprooting the saplings. Their use is limited to one day only if the saplings are uprooted. Only the coconut flower is suitable for consumption while the shell is completely tasteless and inedible. After picking the flower, the shell inside the coconut is used to extract the oil.

According to reports, coconut flowers are rich in dietary fibre and minerals as well such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus. It also contains carbohydrates and soluble sugars. The coconut flower also has hormone-balancing benefits as the fatty acids in it help in creating, processing, and eliminating progesterone and estrogen. This ensures that hormonal balance stays intact. Eating this fruit also improves the secretion of insulin and helps reduce the symptoms of diabetes.
