Senior dancer Nandhini Ramani, a former member of Sangeetha Natak Academy, expert member in Dance Audition Board, former Secretary, Music Academy and Managing Trustee of Dr V Raghavan Centre for Performing Arts, recently opened up on the Margazhi season in the city. Narayana Vishwanath reports...On the Margazhi music festival:Earlier Scenario:Even up to the end of Seventies, the festival scenario was very different and unique. There was an aura, excitement and expectation about the festival. Rasikas used to sit glued to their seats, in the educative morning sessions, to witness vibrant arguments. Those days are only in our memory. Most of the great musicians and dancers would perform only a limited number of concerts. Present scenario:Less said the better. Too many artists and less demand result in empty chairs. Rasikas are mostly captive audience. Apart from this, most musicians perform with predictable sangathis, and in dance, it is monotonous Abhinaya and lack of spontaneity. On present generation of artistes:Very talented young musicians / dancers have arrived on the scene, who are capable of presenting with Sampradaya Sudhdham. That is also the case in dance. But in the present globalised trend, incorporated innovations, displacement of the Margam structure in dance, lack of subtlety and depth, is seen. On present day predicament:Without any hesitation, I can say that the sponsor culture has made a considerable impact on the quality of art. Every artiste wants to be ‘seen’ during the December festival. Even the talented solo dancers, are forced to create new concepts according to ‘whimsical requirements’ to retain their slots. On cultural renaissance:We should look forward to the changing values and understand the efficacy of organising the programmes in this season.
