I'm indifferent to my films: Kay Kay Menon
The Black Friday actor speaks about his latest movie Sankat City.

Kay Kay Menon is not exactly everyone's idea of a funnyman. The actor has played some very serious roles in the last few years. Indeed if you keep aside Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd aside Kay Kay has barely done any comedy worth speaking of.

So when you are told that the actor's next film Sankat City is a full on comic caper, you raise your eyebrows and want to ask the actor that lovely existential question, "Why?"

Excerpts from an interview:

Buzz 18: You're probably going to say that doing comedy was not a conscious decision.

Kay Kay Menon: Yes! Because it wasn't I have always taken up offers that I have liked. There was a time when my choices led me to play some very serious characters in serious films. I have never chosen a movie by a genre. In fact categorising movies in genres is the job of trade pundits who have nothing better to do.

Buzz 18: Why are you so acidic towards critics and industry observers?

Kay Kay Menon: I feel it is time that movie critics in India should go back to school. Very often I find film criticism a little too vituperative. Thankfully most critics have been kind to my work. But there are times you realise that certain a movie or an actor is not being criticised for the right reasons. The idea of a critic is to 'critically appreciate' a work of art. The phrase itself suggests that the first job is to appreciate the work and then within the parameters point out the mistakes.

Buzz 18: So does it mean that criticism doesn't affect you?

Kay Kay Menon: I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be happy if someone said something nice about me. But if a critic has written something negative, I certainly don't get affected because once I finish shooting (and dubbing) the movie, I am indifferent towards it. Besides I don't see the point of going back and reading what I have done wrong in a movie when it is over.

Buzz 18: And does that apply to comments from theatre critics too?

Kay Kay Menon: No, because there is always another show when you can improve upon. Films, like books, once they are over, they are over.

Buzz 18: What drew you towards Sankat City?

Kay Kay Menon: For one, it has a great script. But at the same time I was taken in by Pankaj Advani (the director). Pankaj is an intelligent man who I felt would be the right person to take on such a project. It is easy for a comedy film to go haywire. There has to be an offsetting factor. Pankaj was just that. It's one madcap, over the top movie. And I really enjoyed shooting for it.

What's your reaction?
