At least twice a week, people who prefer non-vegetarian food would like to have meat included in one of the meals. However, in the month of Shravan, many Lord Shiva devotees stop the consumption of meat altogether. So, as per the reports of Local18, this year a drastic drop has been observed in the prices of chicken.
Before the commencement of the Shravan month, the price of chicken was reported to be around Rs 320 to Rs 340 for 1 kg. But during the respective month, the cost of the meat came down drastically. In the Shravan month, believers refrain from consuming meat, which was cited as the reason behind the low prices of chicken, stated Local18. The women engage in Pujas and observe vrats during this period and no meat is cooked in the household.
As an alternative, people buy numerous vegetables extensively. So, because of the high demand, the prices of the veggies were reported to be very high. According to reports, the price of flowers was also reported to be on the rise. During this time, a lot of weddings and other functions take place.
At the moment, skinless chicken can be bought for Rs 150, in many parts of Hyderabad. While normal chicken is being sold for Rs 120 and a whole live chicken was priced at Rs 90. Local 18 says that it has not affected the rearing of the chickens, as no decrease in poultry was reported. The birds have to be kept for a stipulated deadline and beyond it, the animals have to be moved from the farm. So, even if there is no demand for the meat, they have to sell it in the market. This is another reason for the item’s low prices. The reports also state that people prefer to eat chicken because mutton can be very expensive to buy.
