How to make 'me' time at work
How to make 'me' time at work
Hectic work schedules have left individuals with less time for exercise.

GONE are the days of 9 to 5 jobs. Today you are lucky if you get off work before your kid's bedtime. So besides having barely any time to breathe you can hardly ever make time for yourself.

But you do know that that's not good for you. So here are some ways you can make 'me' time for yourself at work. That's right, at work!

Arrange working lunches

You and your colleagues need to discuss an urgent project and it is already 2 o'clock. You really can't postpone your lunchtime any longer. Just ask your colleagues to shift the discussion from the meeting room to the canteen. You can grab a bite while you work.

You can do the same thing when scheduling meetings with outsiders. Discussing important matters over lunch can work wonders in taking the pressure out of work.

But on those days when you just can't get away from your seat, a mini-refrigerator will be really handy. Of course, they are rather small and will fit just a couple of fruits, a few chocolate bars and a drink.

Meet up with a friend for lunch. But make sure to stick the one-hour lunchtime.

Have multi-functional meetings

By the time you reach home everyday your local grocery store is shut and either way you are way too tired to do any shopping. Well, those outdoor client meetings are a great opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

Once you are done with your meeting, do your grocery shopping before you get back to work. Of course, you might want to restrict your shopping to half an hour or your boss will wonder where you have disappeared.

Treat yourself when killing time

Your day is jam packed with meetings and you are rushing from one meeting to the next when you get a call. The guy you were supposed to meet in the afternoon just cancelled.

Well, don't rush back to the office. It will just be out of your way. Instead use the time to go the parlour and get those hairy legs waxed. Or if you don't need to do your waxing, treat yourself to a facial or a back massage.

You could also go on a quick shopping spree. Go to a shopping complex where you have a variety of stores with large display windows. Remember, you don't want to spend too much time in one store. You are looking to treat yourself with an impulse buy.

Stay on the move

With your kind of work schedule waking up early for a morning walk is out of the question and by the end of the day you are too tired to think of exercise. Well, you don't want to land up more than a few kilos overweight. So you better use those working hours to stay fit.

Instead of taking the elevator, use the stairs. When you are not too busy walk over to your colleague's cabin instead of picking up the phone to tell them something. It could help you stretch a little. You could also try desk exercises.

If your company has a gym, make use of it. Carry your gym bag to work and go for a one-hour workout in the evening if you know you are going to stay back late that day.

Take a couple of mid-work breaks

You have to stay back late at work but either way it is not possible to work continuously without a break. A couple of quick breaks never hurt anybody.

You could use the Internet to play a couple of online games or find out something interesting or even read the latest news. But if you don't have too much access to the Internet, just play a couple of games of Solitaire. It will help you unwind.

You could also carry a book to work and read a couple of chapters. But if that's too tiring for you, try listening to an audio book or some music may be.
