BANGALORE: The Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum directed Dr Malathi Manipal Hospital, an unit of the Manipal Health Systems, to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation along with Rs 10,000 cost to a patient after he filed a petition alleging that he had to get his thumb amputated due to the negligence on the part of the hospital staff.
V S Ramachandra Murthy, who was suffering from high fever and cough, was admitted to Dr Malathi Manipal Hospital on February 23, 2010 and the nurses who attended to him inserted an IV tube in his left arm to inject medicines and other fluids into his body. Murthy complained of severe pain in his arm and the doctors in the hospital gave him some pain killers and applied some gel on his arm. Despite repeated requests to attend to the pain in his arm the doctors at the hospital allegedly failed to attend to his problem. After sometime the thumb of the left arm started turning blue and eventually it turned black.

The patient was then shifted to the ICU and the doctors diagnosed that there was a blood clot in his thumb and operated to remove the blood clot. However, the pain in his thumb did not subside. At the advise of one of the surgeons Murthy then got his left thumb removed at Yellamma Dasappa Hospital.

The case was then referred to The Karnataka Medical Council that confirmed that it was primafacie a case of negligence and that deficiency in service had been established.
