SRIKAKULAM: As expected not a single contractor, including B Sai, the highest bidder for Telagam sand reach on river Nagavali, who had quoted Rs 9 crore at the auction few days ago, turned up to pay the initial deposit of 20 per cent of the total bid, assistant director of department of mines and geology, R Golla said on Saturday."Officials are helpless in cracking down on the sand mafia, who botched up the auction process through fake bidders,who have disappeared now as expected," P Venku Naidu, a contractor opined. Officials deliberately allowed fake contractors to make a bid at the auction despite strong protests from other competitors on December 22, he said.Golla said no bidder paid the 25 per cent deposit of the knock down amount in the stipulated time (48 hours after the auction) to confirm the lease. "In case the first bidder does not make the payment, the second bidder will be given the lease rights on Monday," he said.Visakhapatnambased contractor N Balaji Kumar, who had quoted Rs 3.3 crore for Talagam sand reach is the second bidder followed by Hyderabadbased contractor B Raghavendra Reddy who quoted Rs 2.5 crore and Rs 3.15 crore for Pedasavalapuram and Dompaka reaches respectively. Krishna district's G Gopala Krishna had quoted Rs 1.19 crore for Anguru of Kotturu mandal reach.
