BHUBANESWAR: In a significant achievement in upgradation of facilities, the Capital Hospital on Friday commissioned a new Cardiology Department as well as a state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterisation laboratory.  The new facilities at the largest hospital under the peripheral health services of the State were inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.  The new Cardiology Department building and the Catheterisation lab have been established at a cost of ` 5 crore. Both are equipped with the most-advanced machinery and equipment to provide the latest cardiac treatment to thousands of poor patients of not only Bhubaneswar and Khurda district but also the adjoining districts of Nayagarh, Puri and Jagatsinghpur.The new Cardiology building with the new OPD block will be able to provide non-invasive cardiac services like echo-cardiography, TMT, ECG and holter monitoring. The hospital’s superspeciality Department of Cardiology would function from the new block with a 14-bed ward and a two-bed ICU.The catheterisation laboratory has been equipped with the latest Artis Zee Siemens machinery, that have been installed in the three medical colleges of the State, at a cost of ` 3.5 crore. The facility would have a recurring expenses of ` 2 crore annually on maintenance.  The lab has been put under senior cardiologists and technicians with qualified staff nurses.  The facility would enable invasive cardiac procedures for the first time at the hospital and performing of coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty, stenting, pacemaker implantation, balloon mitral valvoplasty, electrophysiological study and devise closure.The benefits for the patients would be immense as the services would be provided at much lower costs than that of private hospitals.  In the absence of such facility in the Capital, the people had to go to private hospitals where they had to spend  lakhs in procedures whereas at Capital Hospital the same services would be available for a few thousands.Among others, Health Minister Prasanna Acharya, Health Secretary Anu Garg and CMO Dr Nirmala Dei were present.
