TIRUNELVELI: The widespread agitation against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP), which was put on hold after the formation of a ‘Peace Committee’, is set to resume on September 11 and this time, the agitators have invited leading social activists like Anna Hazare, Medha Patkar and Arundhati Roy to give a push to their agitation.Addressing the media here on Thursday, activists from the People’s Movement against Nuclear Energy said they have also invited Swami Agnivesh, Shabana Azmi, Vandana Shiva and Aruna Roy.“Even though the Peace Committee is engaged in a dialogue with the authorities, the KKNPP is taking steps to commission the first reactor in September as informed by chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Srikumar Banerjee recently,” activist Anton Gomez said.“It is a betrayal by the government, as it is trying to commission the reactors in a deceptive manner against the wishes of the people,” said Gomez.Another anti-nuclear activist, S P Udayakumar, said the people of Koodankulam, Idinthakarai and neighbouring villages are very thankful to CPM leader Brinda Karat’s comment on nuclear plants. “She has said her party would support any agitation against nuclear plants and that includes the struggle against KKNPP,” he said, adding, “We also welcome her call to put on hold all nuclear power plants in the country.” M Pushparayan, another activist, said that efforts were being taken to bring Arundhati Roy and Medha Patkar to participate in the struggle against KKNPP. “We have also sought appointment with Medha Patkar, who is scheduled to visit Madurai on Friday to attend a private function,” he informed.According to the activists, people will resume their peaceful and non-violent struggle against KKNPP from September 11 at Idinthakarai in the district by holding a massive hunger strike. They also appealled to the MPs and MLAs in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts to support their agitation.
