The total strength of the athletics squad for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games now is 19 -- four men and 15 women.

New Delhi: Discus thrower Harwant Kaur was on Sunday included as a late addition to the India athletics team for the Commonwealth Games beginning in Melbourne on March 15.

The Punjab athlete threw 58.94 metres to make the grade in the selection trials held at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium.

"The selection committee of Athletics Federation of India considered Harwant in view of her current form," Athletics Federation of India General Secretary Lalilt Bhanot said.

The total strength of the athletics squad for the Games now is 19 -- four men and 15 women.

Trials were also held for the men's 4x400 metres relay team.

The quartet of P Shanker, S Srinivas, Satbir Singh and Bhupender Singh clocked 3:06.39 and were not considered for Melbourne.

The selection committee was of the view that the team did not stand even a remote chance of a medal in Melbourne.

The AFI also mourned the death of Istvan Gyulai, the General secretary of International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).

Gyulai passed away on Sunday morning. Gyulai was General Secretary of IAAF since 1991.

In a condolence message from Melbourne, Suresh Kalmadi, President of AsianAthletics Association and an IAAF Council Member, condoled the death of Gyulai.

"Passing away of Gyulai is a great personal lose to me. He was a valuable colleague in the council and a great friend of India," Kalmadi said.
