Ahmedabad: The Ishrat Jehan encounter case will be investigated by a new three-member special investigation team (SIT). The Gujarat High Court on Friday rejected Narendra Modi government's petition that Ishrat Jehan encounter case be handed over to the Gujarat police and set up the new SIT.
Directing the state government to issue notifications within 15 days in the case, the High Court said that SIT will be headed by Delhi Police Joint Commissioner Karnail Singh. The two other members of the SIT are Mohan Jha and Satish Verma, both Gujarat cadre IPS officers.
While hearing the Gujarat government petition, the court criticised the state government when it said that it wanted to keep away outsiders from the SIT that would look into the alleged fake encounter of Ishrat.
Mumbai-based Ishrat, 19, was killed in an encounter along with Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar by Gujarat crime branch officials near Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004.
Gujarat Police at the time of encounter had claimed that Ishrat and the three others were Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives on a mission to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
