Siliguri: In continuing acts of arson in the Darjeeling hills and its foothills as part of statehood demand, a police outpost was torched at Sukhna by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters this evening.
There was no report of any injury or casualty as the few policemen present in the outpost, about 12 km from here, ran away in fear and the outpost went up in flames, police said.
The GJM youth supporters first surrounded the outpost and demanded that a person, arrested earlier on rape charge and now in the police custody at Pradhannagar, in Siliguri, be immediately handed over to them, police said.
As they refused to hear the pleas of police personnel, a war of words ensued and then suddenly the Morcha supporters proceeded to set the outpost aflame prompting all the police personnel to come out and run for their lives.
A big contingent of police from Siliguri city later rushed to Sukhna on hearing the report of arson. The blazes were put off but the outpost was totally gutted, police said. The extent of damage was not clear. A big force, including RAF, cordoned off the area as the situation was reported to be very tense.
On Thursday GJM activists set on fire the residence of GNLF MLA Shanta Chhetri in Kurseong and damaged a private bus at Matigara, near here, during a shutdown called by the Morcha.
Only a couple of days back, GJM youth activists burnt police vehicles and three buses in Kalimpong.
