New Delhi: A comic book style doodle featuring the Anant Pai welcomed Google users in India on his 82nd birth anniversary. The doodle drawn in classic Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle style shows Uncle Pai, as Anant Pai was known to millions of young readers, surrounded by Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle comic books.
Anant Pai was born on September 17, 1929 at Karkala, Karnataka. A scientist by education, but an entertainer by vocation Uncle Pai initiated a comic revolution in India.
Amar Chitra Katha has shown millions of Indians the route to their roots. Tinkle has been the childhood companion of many for over two and half decades. In 1967, the educational comics series Amar Chitra Katha was launched. Each of the comics in this series was devoted to a person or event in Indian history, religion and mythology. Anant Pai conceptualised of all of these, and wrote the scenarios for most of them.
Just a month before his death he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award India's first ever Comic Convention held in New Delhi on February 19-20. Uncle Pai died on February 24, 2011 at the age of 81 following a heart attack.
Apart from being the brain behind these two comics, Anant Pai had also trained thousands of teens in personality development.
Google doodles have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google team has put out commemorative doodles on events ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history.
Google estimates it has created more than 900 doodles since 1998, with 270 of them running in 2010 and more than 150 in 2011.
