Goa rape case: Accused surrenders before police
Rohit is accused of raping a 14-year-old German girl.

Panjim: Goa education minister Atanasio Monserratte's son Rohit has surrendered before the police.

Rohit is accused of raping a 14-year-old German girl.

The Goa education minister appeared rather shaken while defending his son.

Monserratte said, "My son is innocent. He is paying the price for my being in politics. I will go to the heavens to prove his innocence. The entire effort is to pin me down.

Rohit had been absconding since the mother of the victim accused him and PWD Minister Churchill Alemao's nephew, Warren, of raping her minor daughter.

Police had been hunting for Rohit since medical examination of the girl confirmed rape.

Rohit has been booked for rape and for sending lewd messages to the minor girl. But it is still not clear if the victim has named anyone in the case.

Investigations had hit a roadblock when the minor had refused to record her statement or undergo a medical examination, despite being coaxed by psychiatrists and NGOs.

Goa Police were considering reviewing the case and dropping some of the charges against Goa Education Minister's son Rohit Monserrate.

Rohit had been missing since the registration of the complaint and the police had issued a look out notice to ensure that he does not leave the country.
