Life in Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal came into halt as the hardline CPN-Maoist, breakaway faction of UCPN-Maoist, on Tuesday enforced a general strike in protest against next week's Constituent Assembly elections.
The CPN-Maoist and some other fringe parties are opposing the November 19 polls demanding resignation of chairman of the Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi and deferral of the election date.
Hoax bombs were recovered in few places of the capital while, the police arrested at least nine activists of the CPN-Maoist led by hardliner leader Mohan Vaidya for breaking the law, Nepal Police Spokesman Navraj Silwal said.
The agitating party cadres broke glasses of four vehicles for defying the strike, the police said. Schools, colleges, major markets and factories were closed while transport services were mostly halted except few vehicles which defied the strike.
Few motorcycles, press vehicles, tourists vehicles, ambulances and vehicles transporting milk and water were allowed to operate during the shut down.
The agitating group has called the day-long strike and a nine-day transport strike starting from tomorrow in their bid to foil the election. The ancestral home of CPN-UML president Jhala Nath Khanal in Sakhejung-4, Ilam, suffered minor damage when an unidentified group set the house on fire after pouring petrol, the police said.
Cadres of the agitating parties vandalised a vehicle of Nagarik Daily newspaper in the outskirt of Kathmandu Monday morning. Likewise, three vehicles were also damaged at Tinkune area of Kathmandu.
