New Delhi: Bollywood's fascination for the underworld refuses to die down. Another movie based on the underworld, Gangster, hit the screen on Friday amid a controversy arising out of legal bid to stay its release.
Directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Mukesh Bhatt and Mahesh Bhatt, the movie is already generating a huge interest as it deals with the life of underworld don Abu Salem.
For Mahesh Bhatt, controversy has been a staple ingredient of almost all his productions. And his latest offering is no different.
Rumoured to be inspired by the relationship between the underworld don Abu Salem and starlet Monica Bedi, Gangster has managed to escape a plea for a stay on the film in a legal case filed by Salem himself.
"I felt that it was unnecessary for him to put us through the fire because I grant him the right to be looked upon as innocent till proved guilty. Why does he pre-judge my film?," says Mahesh Bhatt.
"I will never violate his right because according to the constitution, he has the right.
The film stars Bhatt camp regular Emraan Hashmi, new find Kangna Ranaut and a promising Shiny Ahuja. My film situation is similar to his - gangster on the run with his moll. But the similarity ends there," he adds.
Ahuja plays a gangster, Daya, who falls for a Mumbai bar girl Simran, but has to abandon her in order to escape from the police. What next?
Well now a semi-alcoholic Simran lands up in the exotic locales of Seoul and rediscovers her lost love in singer Akash, played by Emraan Hasmi.
A love triangle develops she has to now choose between her past and present. It is this inner conflicts in Simran that the film explores.
Ahuja is reportedly the actor to watch out for in the film. With a spell-binding performance in Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi and a Filmfare Award for Most Promising Debut behind him, Shiny is now all set to step into Hollywood.
The actor has reportedly been signed by filmmaker Ashwini Kumar for his first international project The Forest.
