THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cultural Affairs Minister K B Ganesh Kumar has said that he would transform large government owned theatres in the state into small theatres of 200300 seating capacity.
"My objective is to make cinema viewing more enjoyable, to transform the experience of watching cinema,' he said after announcing the 43rd State Film Awards here on Sunday. This was the first major policy statement made by the Cultural Affairs Minister.
Ganesh Kumar also assured that such governmentrun smaller but sprucedup theatres would not charge as exorbitantly as multiplexes. He said that the number of theatres in the state had come down to 600 from 3,000. Besides creating more theatres out of a large governmentrun one, Ganesh has mooted another innovative way to increase the number of theatres. "A number of buildings are now being dismantled to construct large shopping complexes and the like. What I recommend is that wherever structures are demolished for new constructions, space should be provided for a mini theatre within the new complex. Building Rules should be amended accordingly to make this happen,' Ganesh said. When the Minister was informed of the plight of yesteryear actress Vilasini who was now working in a hotel in Kozhikode, he said that he was unaware of the issue.
