TIRUNELVELI: Preparatory work for fuel loading at the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant will begin next month, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) chairman and managing director S K Jain said on Thursday.Speaking to reporters at the KKNPP complex, he said that “after the successful hot-run, some need for adjustments was found and the same was carried out. We have already submitted the test reports to the Atomic Energy Regulatory board (AERB). The clearance for the opening of the reactor pressure vessel is awaited from the AERB.” The inspection of the internal components of the reactor would be taken up after the clearance is given. Following this, an inspection report would be sent to the AERB for detailed study. Once this process is completed, the plant might be given permission to go ahead with the preparatory work for fuel loading, the NPCIL chairman said.“Fuel loading will take three to four weeks. After the fuel loading, we will go for criticality (power production)” he said. The testing of the integrated emergency core cooler system would also take place in the next couple of days, Jain said, while adding, “We have honestly helped in the process of allaying the fears of the people. The reactor is the most modern in the world.”
