New Delhi: Prohibitory orders under Section 144 (joining unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapon) were imposed on Saturday in Karimganj in Assam after Congress MLA from Barak Valley Rumi Nath was beaten up by a hundred-strong mob at a hotel on Friday night.
Rumi's personal life has been under the scanner since she left her first husband and two-year-old daughter and remarried. The 33-year-old MLA allegedly converted to Islam for her second marriage, an act that earned her the wrath of various groups.
Rumi and her 28-year-old husband Zakir Hussain were hospitalised after the incident. Doctors say Rumi has not suffered any internal injury.
Rumi had gone to meet her father on Friday when the incident happened. No police action was taken in the case almost 12 hours since the mob attack on the MLA and her second husband. Rumi's bodyguards too were beaten up by the angry crowd.
Police, however, claims that they acted instantly. "As soon as we got the information about the MLA, the police officer in-charge rescued them and brought them to the police station. We have registered a case. About four people involved in the assault have been identified. There are people who are trying to play this up and to give a communal angle to it. In the area, I will not be surprised if there are some elements from some groups whether communal or political," said DGP Jayant Narayan Chaudhary.
