The killing of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique has yet again brought back focus on how several high profile personalities in Mumbai have received threats to life in the past.
Siddique was shot dead allegedly by members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang on October 12. According to reports, the NCP leader had received threats just 15 days ago.
Baba Siddique’s killing comes months after shots were fired outside actor Salman Khan’s house. Baba Siddique was known to be close friends with several Bollywood celebrities including Salman. In April this year, two bike-borne men had opened fire outside Salman Khan’s house in Mumbai’s Bandra. The Mumbai Police claimed that the shooters belonged to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Here’s a look at high profile personalities in Mumbai who’ve received threats in the recent past.
Salman Khan
Salman Khan has been openly threatened by Lawrence Bishnoi, following which the actor’s security cover was upgraded to Y+. Salman has been on Bishnoi’s hitlist for hunting a black buck in 1998, which, the gangster had said, is considered sacred by the Bishnoi community. Bishnoi, in his threat to Salman had said that he wanted to kill the actor to avenge the actor.
Shah Rukh Khan
Shah Rukh Khan has also been on the hitlist of the underworld ever since he became a successful actor. While he has received several threats early in his career from the underworld, Khan had given a written complaint to the Maharashtra government in October last year that he had been receiving death threat calls after the success of his films ‘Pathan’ and ‘Jawan’. The actor was given Y+ security following these threats.
Kangana Ranaut
Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut recently received death threat over her film Emergency. A video recently surfaced online, in which a man was heard threatening Kangana, saying, “If you release this movie, Sardars will beat you with slippers.”
Ashoke Pandit
In 2023, police personnel were deployed at the residence and office of filmmaker Ashoke Pandit after he reportedly received threats over his film 72 Hoorain. Pandit had said that he has been receiving death threat calls while he was promoting his film.
Sandeep Singh
In 2022, film producer Sandeep Singh received death threats from a person on Facebook who said he will be murdered just like Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Singh has produced movies like Sarabjit, Bhoomi and PM Narendra Modi.
Sanjay Dutt
Sanjay Dutt has had a history of his friendship with those in the underworld. He has received several threats over the years reportedly even from high profile terrorists like Dawood Ibrahim.
While these have been the recent names to have received threats, several celebrities including Preity Zinta, Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar have received threats over the years.
