Five suspected cases of food poisoning at Puthencruz

At least five persons are suspected to have fallen victims of food poisoning at Puthencruz on Sunday.

According to the health officials, all the five fell sick after having food at a marriage reception at Vadavukodu, Puthencruz.

The health officials stated they were alerted about the situation only on the following day since none of the persons approached any of the hospitals in the region for treatment.

“When we spoke to the victims, they said that they had fallen sick immediately after reaching home.

Three of them belonged to one family,” the officials said.

“We are yet to confirm whether it is a case of food poisoning or not. More than 200 persons  attended the function and none of them are  reported to have fallen sick.

“We will submit the report to the Thrissur DMO who will look further into the matter,” said Haseena Mohammed, additional DMO in-charge.

Meanwhile, the owners of Maithri, the catering service that had served food at the function, alleged that false rumours have been spread.

“When we enquired about the issue, it was known that the people who were affected starting showing the symptoms only in the evening.

“Also, a couple of them felt sick in the morning itself. We are positive that it is not our negligence that caused the sickness,” said Sajeevan, owner of Maithri catering service.

The police have not registered any case against the owner of the catering service. “We are studying the matter but it is suspected that false rumours have been spread,” the police said.

However, the catering service is running without the health, food safety and water quality certificates. Also, the service has not obtained a registration from the local bodies, the health official said.
