KOCHI: A major fire, which is said to have caused a damage of nearly Rs 7 lakh, broke out on Friday morning at a leather products shop at Edappally.Four fire units were rushed to the area to put out the fire that erupted on the ground floor of the shop at Toll Junction, Edappally.The shop, ‘In Style,’ selling footwear, travelites, sports and toys caught fire around 6 am. Of the four floors of the building, both the ground and the first floors were completely destroyed in the fire. Fire units from Gandhi Nagar, Eloor, Thrikkakkara and Aluva stations reached the spot immediately. The shop is owned by K K Yusef, Asif Manzil , Kizhakkekara, Masjid Road, Edappally.The owner of the building is K A Saju, Kadavil House. “The fire erupted on the ground floor and spread to the floors above. Heavy smoke was coming out when we reached the spot. The fire is believed to have caused damage worth Rs 7 lakh,” said Fire and Rescue Services Department officials. When the fire fighters arrived, they found flames and smoke coming out of the building.Around 30 fire fighters from four stations took part in the operation.There were no injuries or casualties as the fire broke out before the shop was opened for business. The cause of the fire has not yet been identified. However, it is suspected that electrical short circuit led to the fire.
