COIMBATORE: A happy occasion turned tragic as Mary Scaria, 42, a resident of Ernakulam, was killed and her husband seriously injured when a lorry toppled on their car near Kuniamuthur here on Saturday.
Police said that T T Scaria, 49, along with family members, came from Kerala to celebrate the final day in college of his daughter Maria Scaria, 23, a MTech student of Amrita Deemed University at Ettimadai. After picking her up from the university premises, they were proceeding to the city to do some shopping when tragedy struck. The car was driven by Maria's cousin Jijo John, 28. "Even as the car neared B K Pudur on Palakkad Road, a lorry which was trying to overtake another vehicle came from the wrong side. To prevent a headon collision, Jiji John slowed down the car. When the lorry driver applied sudden brake, the lorry skidded and toppled over the car," said Traffic Inspector Sundarajan.

The car was crushed under the impact. The locals rescued the family members and arranged an ambulance.

While Maria Scaria escaped with minor injuries, her brother Kevin Thomas, 29, and Jijo John suffered fractures on hand and legs.
