Dust Storm, Downpour Hit Mumbai, Thane; Flight Operations Affected

Mumbaikars on Monday afternoon got a much-needed respite from the scorching summer and heatwave-like conditions as overcast skies accompanied by gusty winds brought down the daytime temperature.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously issued a yellow alert for certain parts of the city for May 13, warning of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and dry, gusty winds, especially in Thane and Raigad districts.

Heavy rain was also reported in the western suburbs of Borivali, Kandivali, Malad and Goregaon area. Power cuts were also flagged from some parts of Navi Mumbai.

Due to strong winds, a hoarding collapsed on a petrol pump in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar, trapping several people and crushing numerous cars.

Mumbai traffic police said that vehicular movement was slow at Pooja Junction (Wadala) North Bound and Freeway Tunnel Trombay South due to the fall of the hoarding.

Meanwhile, Social media users took to X (formerly Twitter) to share weather updates and mesmerizing visuals from their area and expressed relief as gusty winds brought the mercury down by a few degrees.

Before the showers, the maximum temperature of Mumbai was between 33 and 34 degrees Celsius.

One of the X users called the weather an “Apocalypse teaser” in Mumbai.

The IMD has also issued an orange alert for districts like Kolhapur, Satara, Pune, Ahmednagar, Nashik and parts of Vidarbha in the coming days.
