New Delhi: Boys who are applying to Delhi University for admissions feel that it is the girls who are getting best deals and boys are a little left out.
The reason being, many of them are going from college to college for some of the most wanted courses, only to find that the subjects are offered only (or predominantly) in girls colleges.
Shreya Dhoundial of CNN-IBN speaks to some of the boys (Liban, Adhir, Ankit and Akshay) who feel so.
Liban George, DU Aspirant said, "Gender bias, it is giving opportunity to girls. And if I want to get into streams of Psychology or Journalism, I have to change my gender to get into a college".
Another DU aspirant Adhir Ghosh said, "Especially since all the boys colleges are converted into co-ed, it is only fair that the girls colleges also allow boys to come in".
They have pointed that only Lady Shri Ram College and Indraprastha College are the only two A grade colleges that offer Journalism and both are girls colleges.
Similarly Psychology is offered at LSR, IP, Miranda House, Gargi, Maitri and Venkateshwara College, among them only Venketeshwara is a co-ed college.
Though colleges realise that the subjects once considered cool only by the girls are now hot with the boys as well but a space crunch does not allow them to introduce any new course.
Kirori Mal College Principal Dr Bhimsen Singh said, "There is no space. For that we require classrooms. Teachers we can get but there is no classroom".
This is a story about the boys but most girls would also like to go to a co-ed college than an all girls one.
And with subject specific gender biases or preferences no longer existing except for (perhaps) home science, it is probably time for the 12 DU all girls colleges to go co-ed.
