CHENNAI: In a shocking incident at Korukkupet on Monday afternoon, a 36-year-old alcoholic assaulted his 60-year-old father after a dispute, tightened the noose around the sexagenarian’s neck and then strangled him to death. The victim, E Jagadee-swaraiah, a native of Tirupur, was a weaver, Korrukupet Crime Inspector C Pugalendhi told Express. A resident of Shanmugarayan Street in Old Washermenpet, he and his vagabond second son Pr-asad Babu were dependent on his wife Hemavathi, a teacher under the noon-meal scheme in a school at Gummidipoondi, he said. “While the other two sons of the couple were married and settled, Prasad was jobless and an alcoholic,” the officer said. The father and son never shared a cordial relationship, with Jagadee-swaraiah taking Prasad frequently to task for not being employed. Prasad had studied up to Class X, scoring good marks, but then drifted and took to drinking. On Monday, around 5 pm, the Korrukupet police received information that Jagadeeswaraiah’s body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his house. A police party, led by inspector Pugalendi, recovered the body and sent it for autopsy. Preliminary investigation revealed a bleeding wound at the centre of the victim’s head and strangulation marks around the neck. Suspecting foul play, the police team began grilling the victim’s family. The needle of suspicion pointed at Prasad, who disappeared from the scene and evaded summons for inquiry. However, he was later nabbed and grilled.Prasad claimed that there was a verbal altercation between him and his father. The blame-game took a violent turn, when the younger man picked up a plastic chair and hit his father on the head. Blood started oozing from Jagadeeswaraiah’s head and in a fit of rage, the weaver took a chair and his wife’s sari and proceeded to hang himself. Driven by drunken madness, Prasad tightened the noose around the old man’s neck, saying he would help him to die. “Not satisfied with it, he strangulated him with a towel, kicked away his father’s chair and stood watching his father dying,” the police officer said. He then went out, brought himself booze for Rs 200. He later mopped the blood stains and went to cousin Vemu and told him that his father had hung himself.Prasad was arrested for murder and produced before the 15th George Town court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
