HYDERABAD:It's time for motorists to rethink about driving after downing a peg or two. The traffic police's drive against drunken driving will start from Friday. Unlike in previous such initiatives, when drunken drivers were penalised and let off, police will be hauled off to drivers from now on.Announcing the spirited drive, additional commissioner of police (traffic) CV Anand said drunken drivers will be booked under Section 185 (a) of the Motor Vehicle Act and produced in court on the very next working day."Their vehicles will be impounded to prevent them from risking other people's lives as well as their own," Anand said.Under 185 (a) of the Motor Vehicle Act, a driver with blood alcohol content (BAC) in excess of 30 mg per 100 ml of blood when checked by a breathalyser, is liable for six months in jail and/or a fine of Rs 2,000. For subsequent such offences, if committed within three years of the first, the imprisonment may go up to two years and or a fine of up to Rs 3,000. Hitherto, police used to book drunken drivers under Section 184 (b) of the Motor Vehicle Act and collect a fine on the spot. Anand said all traffic officers (some 175) above the rank of assistant subinspector (ASI) have been trained in the AntiDrunken Driving Testing Protocol.Ten teams would be stationed at strategic places in the city from 10 p.m onwards to round up drunken drivers. Banners will be displayed about drunken driving at all these places. Senior traffic police officers will monitor the drive.
