BBMP to start a 10-day campaign from today

The BBMP is planning to carry out a 10-day door-to-door campaign from Monday to create awareness about the dengue fever among the citizens in all the 198 wards of the city in association with the Department of Health and Family Welfare.

Speaking to Express, a Health Department officer said that it is a larval source reduction campaign which will primarily involve identification of houses and detecting the sources of the carrier mosquitoes. “The entire city will be covered within the next ten days,” he added.

The sources  of dengue causing mosquitoes, said the official, could be coconut shells, rubber tyres and stored water.

“During the drive, the breeding grounds for mosquitoes will be eliminated,” he said.

The officer added that the BBMP teams will visit each house and identify  the dengue fever cases so that they can be screened. “Though this has been going on for the past six months, the campaign is going to be a war-footing exercise,” the health official said.

Deputy Commissioners, District Health Officers and District Surgeons across all the districts in the State have been directed by the Health Department to conduct the campaign. “The campaign has already been conducted in Hassan and Davangere,” he added. There are 1,193 confirmed cases of Dengue across the state so far this year, he noted.

“Between July and October there is a high likelihood of people contracting dengue. This is because the mosquitoes find an easy breeding ground. Once the rain stops, there will be no cases of dengue,” the official observed.

He said that schools have been directed to take precautionary measures.

He added that deaths are caused due to loss of time before getting the confirmatory tests done. He said,  “Bleeding and red patches on skin indicate that the patient has reached a critical state, One should not wait for that long.” It may be noted that dengue is a self-limiting disease and there are no specific drugs used to treat it.
