New Delhi: Political pundits in the US may be writing off Donald Trump following charges of sexual misconduct and non-payment of taxes but in India one man thinks the Republican nominee may still come up trumps in the Presidential election: Subramanian Swamy.
“These allegations don’t stand. Bill Clinton was much worse. I expect Trump to win. He is still in the race,” the BJP national executive member told CNN-News18.
With regard to the charges of sexual misconduct and misogyny levelled against Trump, Swamy said the Republican candidate has taken on his Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton by appearing at a press meet with three women who accused Bill Clinton of sexual misconduct. “It clearly shows that Trump is still in the race,” Swamy said. Also Read: Verbal Assaults and F**k-you Pyrotechnics: Crude Anatomy of Donald Trump Campaign
Reacting to a New York Times expose that Trump might not have paid any income tax for 18 years, the BJP MP said that it was not his fault if the US federal law allowed it. “Trump has not broken any law. The law which allows such things may be unethical. It may not be correct. But, it is not his mistake. He has used it to his advantage,” Swamy said.
The BJP leader also rubbished charges of Islamophobia against Trump describing them as a motivated campaign funded by countries like Saudi Arabia.
“These countries fund the elements who make such attacks. They attack everybody. They attacked even me. They made similar charges against me at Harvard. These are vested interests,” Swamy said. He felt that Trump was opposing entry to Syrian refugees in large numbers and was not against everyone.
The former Union minister also said that it was going to be a close fight and he is of the view that finally Trump would triumph.
