New Delhi: Director Anand Kumar's latest film 'Desi Kattey' hit the screens today. Starring television actor Jay Bhanushali and Vinod Khanna's nephew Akhil Kapur in leading roles, the film touches several genres: from romance, thriller, friendship, betrayal and sportsmanship; to patriotism and terrorism.
Directed by Kumar, who has earlier made 'Delhi Heights' and 'Zilla Ghaziabad', 'Desi Kattey' hums and stumbles along a highly predictable storyline.
Two street-smart boys Pali (Kapur) and Gyani (Bhanushali) sell local pistols (kattey) in a small town in UP. They steal, ogle at older women who're bathing, share food and run on rustic roads together in slow-motion. The fight, they struggle and they grow up to idolise the local crime lord (Ashutosh Rana).
Amidst this power-struggle, a retired army officer (Suniel Shetty) sees that the young chaps are really good at shooting. So that's why he decides to help them make a career as professional shooters, representing India and participating in national and international tournament.
What happens next is a yawn-inducing tale of their struggles, achievements and fall-outs. A whole lot of pistol bullets, punches and litres of blood later, the film ends on an entirely predictable, but painfully stretched note.
The only actor that stands out in this lot is Ashutosh Rana. With his usual finesse, he is perfect as the magnanimous crime lord-cum-aspiring politician. The women -- Tia Bajpai and Sasha Agha are nothing more than arm candy, and the songs are ill-timed. There was also this particularly risque item number that drew whistles from our almost-empty auditorium.
A dull and painfully long affair, watch it only if you want to punish yourself for breaking your diet or something. Stay away, otherwise.
