New Delhi: Security measures beefed up in the capital on Tuesday as it went on a high alert mode ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in view of threat perception from terrorists.

Around 10, 000 security personnel have been deployed across Delhi as police intensified anti-sabotage and anti-explosive checks to thwart any form of terrorist strikes, including car bomb or fidayeen attacks.

Commandoes of paramilitary forces are also positioned at strategic locations in Lutyens in Delhi, including on the Rajpath where President A P J Abdul Kalam will unfurl the tricolour and take salute of the marching contingents on January 26.

Police officials said that they have "general" intelligence inputs about terrorist plans to subvert the R-Day celebrations but have not received any "specific threat" so far to target the capital.

Security has also been stepped up at vital places like airport, security installations and crowded areas including railway stations, bus terminals, metro stations, markets, cinema halls and places of worship, sources said.

Checking and frisking have been maximised at all entry points with police setting up three layers of barricades to keep a vigil on all those entering the capital in the next three days.

All prominent market places have been brought under close circuit television (CCTV) cover and private security guards employed by various market associations asked to extend total cooperation to police in maintaining a tight vigil.

A full-dress rehearsal of the R-Day parade was held here with all security agencies including the Army monitoring the arrangements to ensure "trouble-free" celebrations.

“A multi-layer security apparatus will be in place in coordination with the police. All arrangements have been made and the right levels of alert are being maintained," General Officer Commanding, Delhi area, Major Gen P C Bhardwaj said.

Bhardwaj, who will be leading the R-Day parade, said all security agencies are working in sync to ensure smooth conduct of the function to be attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the country's top political and military brass.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will be the chief guest at this year's Republic Day celebrations.

Police had a fortnight ago launched a major exercise to sanitise the capital by conducting random checks at hotels and guesthouses besides intensifying the tenent verification drive.

All property dealers and second-hand car dealers were asked to furnish details about their recent deals and pass on information especially about customers from outside the state.

Besides this cyber cafe owners were directed to maintain the records of all e-mail users.
