Delhi government discussed the measures to keep the prices of essential vegetables, including onion and potatoes, under control during the upcoming summer months.

New Delhi: Delhi government on Monday discussed the measures to keep the prices of essential vegetables, including onion and potatoes, under control during the upcoming summer months.

Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia held a review meeting with Gopal Rai, who holds employment, development, labour, transport and general administration portfolios, and Food & Supply Minister Asim Ahmed Khan and other senior officials on the issue. Delhi had witnessed steep hike in the prices of essential vegetables during the summer months. "To have a meaningful market intervention, the preparation is essential at the right earnest," Sisodia said.

The deputy chief minister asked the concerned agencies that the objectives of Delhi Government were, giving farmer due price for his produce and supply to consumers of Delhi, especially the economically weaker sections at reasonable prices.

The process of augmentation of creating buffer stock in producing areas needs to be strengthened, he said. Sisodia also directed the departments concerned to provide legality to the vendors selling vegetables on pushcarts so that they can honestly earn their livelihood and provide effective delivery mechanism to the people.

The departments are working on the modalities of modernising push carts so that strain on the seller is reduced and vegetables are supplied in hygienic conditions to the consumers, he added.
