New Delhi: The Delhi High Court will on Wednesday hear the bail plea of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar, who has been arrested for alleged sedition.
The Supreme Court had refused to hear Kanhaiya's bail plea, stating that it would create an impression that other courts were incapable.
This comes even as the Delhi Police has done a U-turn in the case by objecting to granting bail to Kanhaiya.
Justifying the move, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi has said that Kanhaiya, if granted bail, may try and influence witnesses in the case. He told mediapersons that the JNUSU president was bound to indulge in acts that violated penal code.
Earlier, Delhi Police had stated that it would not oppose Kanhaiya Kumar's bail plea. He was arrested for sedition in connection with an alleged anti-national event in JNU.
Meanwhile, it has been almost a week since lawyers attacked JNU students and reporters on the Patiala House Court premises.
Though one of the lawyers, Yashpal Singh, was arrested, he was soon released on bail. He was questioned by the police for the incident which occurred on February 15 and got repeated on February 17. He has been charged for rioting, unlawful assembly and voluntarily causing hurt, incidentally all charges are bailable.
