New Delhi: As Delhi braced for chilly days ahead, hundreds were left without a roof over their heads after 500 slums were demolished by the Railways on Saturday. A minor child was also allegedly killed during the anti-encroachment drive by the Railway police.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condemned the act and has said that he was not aware of the demolitions.
He has also said that the District Magistrate of the area has been suspended for not providing relief to the slum dwellers. Delhi witnessed the real chill of the winters on Saturday with temperatures in the national capital set to dip further in the upcoming days.
However, the Railways denied that the child's death in the area is not related the anti-encroachment drive. "When Police and Railway officials gathered at the site, it was noticed that the death of a child had occured in one of the Jhuggies in the morning. It had nothing to do with the removal of encroachments that started only two hours later", said the statement.
