VELLORE: A lorry driver, who was absconding after his vehicle was involved in a multiple collision that claimed three lives in Rangapuram near Vellore, surrendered before the Sathuvachari police on Thursday. Renugopal (42) had parked his lorry on the Bangalore-Chennai National Highway on Wednesday morning, when a car carrying nine persons returning to Chennai from Yelagiri rammed into the vehicle. Three persons in the car, including a couple, died on the spot. The deceased were identified as Krishnamani (62), his wife Chellathai (56) and Seeniyammal (35). The two families from Thiruvottiyur in Chennai had been to Tirupati and while returning they had allegedly stayed in Jawadhu and Elagiri during the Pongal holidays. Renugopal was arrested.Man Dies in Mishap Manigandan (35), a textile businessman from Timiri near Arcot, was hit by a lorry on Wednesday night while on his way home from Vellore. He was rushed to Arcot Government Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Police have registered a case. Detained Under Goondas ActA bootlegger was detained under the Goondas Act in Rathnagiri on Thursday. Venkatesan (38) of Melakuppam village had previously been arrested in December last year for selling illicit liquor. Bootlegger HeldRavi (43) of Kalambur near Arni, found selling liquor in his petty shop, was apprehended by the police. Two quarter measure liquor bottles were seized from him.
