New Delhi: An alleged frontman of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim Romesh Sharma was on Tuesday sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment by a Mumbai court in an eight-year-old FERA violation case.
The court also imposed the fine of half the amount of which Sharma had duped his partnership firm M/s Nextone in 1997-98. "I sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for five years and impose a fine of Rs 61 lakh on him," Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau was quoted as saying.
According to the prosecution, M/s Nextone had exported garments worth $3.5 lakh to USA and did not recover the cost of goods within the stipulated time.
So on April 21, the court convicted him in the case under various provisions of FERA for failing to realise the value of exports that was to be realised within six months.
Sharma has been charged under Section 18 of the FERA.Agencies report the Sharma’s co-accused and his Ajay Nayar was absconding and declared a proclaimed offender.
Sharma is in jail for the, since his arrest in November 1998, facing trial in various criminal cases including criminal intimidation, extortion and murder.
