The family of Sunil James demanded the Union government to take action to ensure his speedy return.

Mumbai: A date for the trial of the merchant navy Captain imprisoned in Togo, Sunil James is expected to be set on Tuesday. The date will most likely be December 27.

The family of James said that they contacted the lawyer and were extremely disheartened upon finding out that the file was currently with the prosecutor who has indicated that he will review and provide direction on Tuesday.

"Between today and tomorrow a date for the trial will be set and that date will most likely be December 27. This does not mean a decision will be made on December 27, only that the trial may commence on this date. If the Indian government does not intervene appropriately and immediately, this is a lost battle," said Sunil's family.

The family of Sunil James, the merchant navy Captain imprisoned in Togo, had organised a solidarity march at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and demanded that the Union government takes action to ensure his speedy return so that he can conduct the last rites of his 11-month-old son who died earlier this month.

Sunil James's family is mourning the death of his son, who died of septicemia. The baby's funeral has been put on hold in the hope that he will be freed from jail to perform the last rites of his only child.

Sunil James is accused of complicity in theft and aiding the pirates.

Aditi James, wife of the Captain James who along with his crew was arrested by Togo officials in July, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday to appeal for the release of her husband.

Since then she has been running from pillar to post to bring Sunil back so that the baby's funeral can be held.
