BANGALORE: Among the several ways to go eco-friendly during this Ganesha festival, what could be more thoughtful than opting for a paper made Ganesha idol, says city based environmentalist, Akshay Hebalikar.Speaking to media after flagging off ‘Ramky BIG Green Ganesha’ paper collection drive here on Friday he said, “With the immersion of painted Ganesha idols, every year more than 200 tonne of toxic waste are mixing with water in city lakes.Besides affecting the lakes and water bodies, ground water level too is affected.This water when used for consumption is affecting the central nervous system and digestion in human beings.”More than a ritual, ganesh chaturthi has become a celebration.“Every year the number of communities organizing ganesh puja has been increasing.Also, people buy expensive idols as a race with other communities,” he said.“The idol will not only be made of newspapers but will also be painted with natural colours which are 100 per cent eco-friendly and biodegradable”, said, D K Nagraj, Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited, one of the organisers of the event.“A paper collection van will move around residential colonies and corporate offices.Th tonne of newspapers collected will be supplied to paper made idol designers, who would make the idol from the collected newspaper” he added. This is an initiative taken by a priavate radio station in association with Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited to generate awareness among people to celebrate ganesh chaturthi in environment-friendly way. The 10 feet tall ‘Ramky BIG Green Ganesha’ will be installed at Bangalore Central Mall on September 3.Meanwhile, those wishing to go eco-friendly this ganesh chaturthi can get paper made Ganesha idols in various sizes at - Cauvery Emporium, M G Road and Shiridi Sai Enterprises, Benson Town.
