Beijing: Cuba's former Olympic taekwondo champion Angel Valodia Matos was expelled from major international competitions for kicking the referee in the head when he was disqualified in a match on Saturday.

The 31-year-old chased Swedish referee Chakir Chelbat as soon as he was sent off for taking too much injury time in the middle of a +80kg bronze medal bout.

The World Taekwondo Federation said Matos and his coach would be permanently barred from all championships it promotes.

Matos, who won the -80kg gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games, was fighting world silver medallist Arman Chilmanov of Kazakhstan at the time.

He shoved the referee and kicked him in the head before a booing crowd.
