BANGALORE:  The opposition Congress on Tuesday urged the state government to bring out its own crop insurance scheme for small and marginal farmers.Participating in a discussion in the Assembly on the prevailing drought situation in the state, Congress MLA M B Patil said that currently crop insurance benefits were available only to those farmers who had taken crop loan from cooperative societies and they did not cover small and marginal farmers. “Therefore, the state government must evolve its own insurance scheme to help these farmers,” he added.Demanding the government to take up relief measures on a war footing, Patil also urged the government announce Rs 10,000 per hectare compensation for farmers affected by the drought. He also accused the government of discriminating while releasing funds to constituencies represented by Opposition members.Former minister Shivaraj Tangadagi accused the state government of not honouring its assurance to release Rs 1 crore each to all Assembly segments to take up immediate relief works.“Not a single rupee has been released though the government had declared 99 taluks as drought-hit two months ago,” he said.Opposition members Bandeppa Kashempur, Subhash Guttedar, A S Patil Nadahalli spoke in the debate.
