KOCHI: After dealing with huge tax arrears, the tax collection drive initiated by the Kochi Corporation last month has yielded good results.Earlier, the average monthly tax collected by the civic body used to be pegged at Rs 4 crore, but in the last month, the civic body collected Rs 15 crore as tax.The Corporation is planning to conduct more camps to collect property tax, industrial licence fee and professional tax that has been due to the civic body.“Doorto- door campaigns will also be done to encourage residents to pay their arrears,” said a top official with the Revenue Department of the Corporation.The civic body also plans to form a special cell of lawyers to deal with property tax-related cases.Earlier, Mayor Tony Chammany had made it clear that the Corporation would take strong action against those evading building taxes, a major source of revenue to the Corporation.“A textile shop on MG Road, a prominent five star hotel, another building in Palarivattam and an education institution in the city are in the list of tax defaulters.An 11-storeyed hotel, that failed to pay tax was fined Rs1.25 crore,” he said.
