Fierce clashes broke out between 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru supporters and security forces in downtown Srinagar after Friday prayers.
The supporters were raising flags of Pakistan and terrorist group Islamic State as they pelted stones at the police.
Though stone-pelting at security forces occasionally takes place in the Valley, what was new this time was that the protesters also showed banners saying 'Thank JNU'
This is a reference to what happened at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University where an event was held and slogans raised in support of Guru. JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested in a case of sedition in connection with this.
The clashes took place near the historic Jamia Masjid after security forces scuttled the march by a group of young men.
Soon after the Friday prayers at Kashmir's main mosque, the protesters, shouting pro-freedom slogans, tried to take out a march towards Nowhatta Chowk.
Security forces stopped the march, triggering clashes in Nowhatta area which spread to adjoining areas like Gojwara, and Saraf Kadal, police said.
The men pelted stones on the forces who fired several tear-smoke canisters to disperse the protesters. No one was injured in these clashes, they said.
