PUDUCHERRY: Three police teams have been formed to nab the absconding accused persons involved in the fake currency racket in the Union Territory, which came to light with the arrest of a Jharkhand resident, Mohammed Ismail Sheik (30), on Wednesday night. Sources said the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has already begun a probe in this regard in other States, has been informed about the arrest.A top police official told ‘Express’ that the teams would be led by Bascaradas, Shivakumar and Balakrishanan under the CID wing of Puducherry Police. These teams will visit Jharkhand, West Bengal and Chennai respectively for inquiry.Sources said that both the NIA and CID wing would share vital information in the case. It may be recalled that Gorimedu Police had arrested Mohammed Ismail Sheik and seized counterfeit currencies amounting toRs 1,90,500 from him on Wednesday night. Ismail had named five others, who had accompanied him.AIADMK Calls for CBI ProbeMeanwhile, the AIADMK has demanded a CBI probe into the fake currency racket that came to light on Thursday. AIADMK State Secretary A Anbazhagan alleged that Puducherry had turned a haven for anti-social and anti-national elements.He claimed that in the past, the police had detected some cases of fake currency, including the one in which currency printing machines, paper and ink were recovered from a street in Uppalam.However, the case still remained unsolved, he added.He claimed that in the present case it was suspected that fake currency to the tune of several crores had been circulated in Puducherry and urged banks to create awareness among the people on detecting counterfeit notes. Besides, the banks should also apprise the people of the serial numbers under which the fake currency notes had been circulated, he added.
