BANGALORE: With an aim to bring down the the neonatal mortality in the state, the HomeBased Newborn and Child Care (HBNCC), earlier launched as a pilot study in some regions of Gulbarga district, will soon be extended to other districts across the state.
Based on the Gadchiroli model, the HBNCC model of low cost primary neonatal care at home was mooted by the Society for Education Action and Research in Community Health (SEARCH), an NGO in Gadchiroli of Maharashtra. Speaking to TNIE, Mission Director of te project Selva Kumar said: "This project, initially started in Gadichiraoli in Maharashtra, has registered less number of infant mortality cases. A similar programme was started in Gulbarga and now it will soon be extended to whole state. We would soon start training the Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and other health workers and medical officers to take care of the child and mother at home after the delivery."

Apprising the results in Gadchiroli district, he further said: "We had earlier signed an MoU with SEARCH for training a team of health workers and ASHA with skills for implementing the model in Karnataka. Now, once the training programme gets over, we are geared up to launch it effectively across all the districts in the state."
