COIMBATORE: Selling a Che Guevara brand slippers has landed a fashion shop here in trouble. Two staff of the shop were arrested on Monday after Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) cadre protested against it alleging that it printing the revolutionary’s image in a slipper am ounts to defaming the revolutionary.A Hemanth, 33, manager of the Upbeat Fashion Studio and and salesperson K Radhakrishnan, 23, were arrested by the RS Puram police based on the complaint filed by R Athi Ganesan, a BSP functionary. “He is an icon for revolutionaries across the world. Just we won’t accept if Gandhiji’s picture on a slipper, we will also never accept using Che Guevara on a slipper. It amounts to insulting such a great leader,” Athi said.Following a protest by the party cadre, the RS Puram police have invoked IPC section 355 (using criminal force to any person, intending thereby to dishonour that person) and section 3 of TN Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement)Act.But the shopkeeper said that nothing is intentional. “Che Guevara brand is a popular brand and we sell items like T-shirts and bands with his image printed.,” said Neel, one of the partners in the company.
