New Delhi: The CBI has formally taken over the investigations into the death of Swami Nigamanand. The 36-year old died fasting for about four months at a Dehradun hospital in June this year.

While local authorities said he died due to his poor health after having been on a fast, many others had claimed that he had been poisoned.

Nigamanand had been protesting against pollution in river Ganga. The Dehradun branch of the CBI will register a case over his death.

Nigamanand of the Matra Sadan in Haridwar was fighting a lone battle against stone crushers and illegal mining on the river bank.

No one paid heed - the miners and crushers got a stay from the high court and mining continued unabated.

A month into the fast, Nigamanand's condition deteriorated. He slipped into a coma and ironically shared the same ICU as yoga guru Baba Ramdev for two days at the Himalayan Hospital before he lost his battle with life.
