Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha’s appeal to the Union government for the release of water from the KRS reservoir, irked the farmers of this region.
Farmers led by Nanjundegowda staged a protest to send a strong message to the state as well as the Union government not to heed to the pressure of the neighbouring state, by blocking the highway on Sunday.
They blocked the Bangalore to Mysore highway near Srirangapatna, besides stepping into the river Cauvery to protest against the stand of the Tamil Nadu government by raising slogans against it.
‘Will Intensify Protest’
Nanjundegowda cautioned that if the state or U n i o n g o v e r n m e n t bowed to the pressure of the Chief Minister of the neighbouring state and release the water from KRS, farmers will intensify their protest.
Nanjundegowda said that it is not fair to ask for the release of water from Cauvery, when Karnataka is reeling under a severe drought, and people are facing an acute shortage of drinking water
