Islamabad: At least eight people, including a policeman, were killed and 25 others injured on Sunday in a car bomb attack at a polling station during by-election for a parliamentary seat in Pakistan's restive northwestern region.

The explosives-laden car was detonated by unidentified attackers outside the polling station in a government-run school in Buner district of North West Frontier Province, TV channels reported.

Constable Bahadar Zaib was among the eight people killed in the attack, they said.

Polling for a seat in the National Assembly or lower house of parliament was going on when the car bomb exploded. Twenty five people were also injured.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of parliamentarian Abdul Mateen Khan.

The blast occurred about 90 minutes after polling started. There were also reports that some armed men hiding in hills around the polling station opened fire on voters who had gathered there. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Earlier, the same area had witnessed clashes between supporters of two rival political parties.
