KOCHI: The All-Kerala Railway Passengers Association state committee meeting has demanded that the mainline electrical multiple unit (MEMU) service in the state which was proposed in the last Railway budget should be commenced at the earliest. The MEMU coaches which arrived at Ernakulam for conducting services on Kollam - Ernakulam route were immediately called back to Chennai. It was only after the intervention of the association that the move was dropped, the organisation stated in a press release. “This is the latest instance of the Railways’ neglect towards the state,” the organisation said.Such incidents justify the state’s long-pending demand for a railway zone of its own. The zone will have a general manager with various powers. The state government and the MPs from the state must work earnestly to realise it. Passengers association president Justice P Somachudan Nair presided over the meeting. Mathew Paul, V George, Jayaprakash, John George, T D Salim, V George, K Vijayan and Saji Mootheril spoke at the meeting.
