In the wake of the state’s dissent with the Ministry of Agriculture in the Endosulphan issue, Kerala should reiterate its stand before the Supreme Court, urged senior Congress leader V M Sudheeran. He pointed out that the Agriculture Department has been taking a stand which is against the interests of the people.
He was speaking at the Press Club here on Tuesday after handing over the Rajeevan Kavumbayi Media Award to Manoj Kadambad of Malayala Manorama. Sudheeran pointed out that development and developmental projects should be eco-friendly.
Furthermore, the authorities should ensure that a proper rehabilitation package is in place.
In the wake of the ‘Emerging Kerala 2012’ investors’ meet, Sudheeran demanded that the state government should ensure that the projects coming up are environment-friendly.
Referring to the controversies associated with the National Highway widening, Sudheeran said that it should be suspected whether there is a nexus between the NHAI authorities and the BOT companies. “These companies often come up with pressure tactics to force the governments to toe their line. Many NHAI officials are currently under the CBI scanner. Though both the Oommen Chandy and V S Achuthanandan governments tried to control and restrict these companies it did not completely materialise,” he said.
Lashing out at the state government for not playing a pro-active role in environmental issues, Sudheeran said that with the authorities failing to take action, there is an emerging mafia culture in the state.
